ALEX LOCKWOOD, I had heard Harry Price was a confirmed hoaxer, although I know he was very famous in the field.

It's such a large field, Cactus, I can't find my horse in case I need to make a quick getaway Wink I don't have any books of his, btw. And I only really am aware of him because of the Borley Rectory case.

But the Victorian and Edwardian eras did produce more 'flakes' than your average ice cream van, admittedly Smile Having seen some of the so-called paranormal photos - floating tables, faces in clouds, and those infamous Cottingley Fairies... I wonder how they had the nerve! They are so fake, it's laughable.Laughing As for Piltdown Man - really Conan Doyle - Holmes would've been appalled Rolling Eyes Mediums do come in many sizes Iain

Iain Lawrence, as far as mediums go, I used to very sceptical of such claims, but after reading a few accounts I think some may possibly be genuine:

http://www.worldofghosts.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4088

Maybe another reason people wouldn't have been going to mediums and others trying to debunk them, was the strength of Religion back then. Christians are told it is forbidden to contact the dead, and if it is forbidden to do it, that tells me the church/churches believe it is in fact possible to do it Shocked

People said that the results were only from conclusive experiments, but the file draw tests of failed results were also included, which were insignificant and proved even more conclusively to the validity of the tests. The subject was then quietly slipped under the carpet by the scientific community , who have a whole lot to loose through positive varification of psychical research documented evidence?

But why would the scientific community want to push this subject under the carpet?

No results or better than fake results.

Yes definately.

Personally I believe scientific experimentation should be done in this subject, but it is not my area of interest. I just seek personal proof; my proof doesn't need to be just as conclusive as DB's Laughing

Interesting tale, Cactus. I'm not sure about mediums myself. Saw one once - we'd never met before, and I told her nothing about myself, btw. She did the Tarot bit, and said I could ''talk to people". And that some people "close to me who had passed on" were standing behind me. I turned round, and saw no-one. I wonder what was in those fags she'd been smoking?? banana And how did she know which way round the Tarot Cards were supposed to be?? Rolling Eyes [In another post I've written about that Inverted stuff]

SHADOWDANCER, my initial belief would be that a certain % of them will be fake, probably most of them, and maybe they all are. I will go to a few separate ones at some point. Before I go I will read more about them, including sceptics beliefs ie: coldreading etc... I will need to hear something from him/her that is very personal or that no-one could possibly know before I will believe.

said I could ''talk to people". And that some people "close to me who had passed on" were standing behind me.

I will give no credit to this sort of information.

I'll also try and find a way to catch him/her out, come up with a trick question or something Wink

The scientific comunity brush it under the carpet because, if the truth of the finding through parapsychology were to be excepted and released to the general public, it would cast a whole lot of dought upon the apparant known world of science as we know it. This would leave a lot of high ranking scientist with egg on there faces and cause many others to re asses there current findings. A whole lot of hassle for a lot of people. Easier to say we're all just nutters who talk crap and talk to dead people. The general population who are taught science through school know no other than to believe every word they say and those who are higher qualified can only asses our findings in conjuction with known education they are taught. Catch 22 realy. Plus anyone who is open minded is looked down on by the rest of the scientific comunity, so they generaly keep a low profile. Ironicaly its the people who push the boundries of theoretic science who come up with new concepts. Ie Quantum and the excistance of dark enery and dark mass as to make up the rest of what we do not see around us and which causes star shadows in space, bends light etc. But they are seen as silly untill there theories are excepted. The world is flat..lol..

The tombstone = Dead People, btw, although you'd probably guessed that. Maybe I shouldn't use Graphics instead of Words! I got that habit off Big Sis (Henut).

Writing with Capital Letters - I caught that from Indulging in too much Gothic(k) Literature... . Once bitten it's a difficult Habit to get rid off Exclamation Which is why I like Gothic(k) Music (Ancient & Modern), Clothes, etc... . Thanks Lizzie (aka Black Cat)!

Henut said the Username I picked once belonged to a Shaman. She got hears from the Mistress of an Ancient Egyptian Priest. Rolling Eyes Sisters are a Bad Influence... Wink

I did 'give credit'. Unfortunately. It cost me 25 quid for the session. Idea Note to self - avoid Mediums at All Cost... .

'Cold Reading'? Is that Fiction for Eskimos? Laughing

SHADOWDANCER, I have found a medium that I will go to:

http://www.psychicfiona.com/

Cold reading is a series of techniques used by mentalists, illusionists, and con artists to determine or express details about another person, often in order to convince them that the reader knows much more about a subject than they actually do. Without prior knowledge of a person, a practiced cold reader can still quickly obtain a great deal of information about the subject by analyzing the person's body language, age, clothing or fashion, hairstyle, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race or ethnicity, level of education, manner of speech, place of origin, etc. Cold readers commonly employ high probability guesses about the subject, quickly picking up on signals from their subjects as to whether their guesses are in the right direction or not, and then emphasizing and reinforcing any chance connections the subjects acknowledge while quickly moving on from missed guesses.

I guess by not reacting to what is said and various other things, that can rule out that the person is using this method instead of being genuine. It would also be helpful if she is a bit stupid Laughing

I am always looking round bookshops for Graphic Novels. Especially on a Gothic theme. Can't seem to get enough of them... .
