Weather balloons are designed to fly at high altitude - until they fall to earth that is. AA guns are not particularly accurate if you look into their extensive use in europe during the second world war.
Maybe they did hit the weather balloon but it's hardly going to explode if it's hit is it. The fact that only 1400 shells were fired tells me that pretty quickly they realised they were not actually firing upon anything threatening.

It can be argued either way as can most things that relate to the paranormal but when examining any case we have to take the blinkers of cynicism and belief off.
It's wrong to not consider the paranormal as a real explanation but it's equally wrong to believe without evidence or at least considering all the other more rational explanations for a given - video - story - photo - claim.

It's not just our eyes that are prone to error but our brains. We're obviously not blind and our eyes have evolved binocular vision primarily for hunting - not spotting alien spaceships in the night sky Laughing

Eyes pointing forwards are exellent for judging distance.
This is so hunters can attack prey easily and with great accuracy .

You will also notice that its dears, catle and sheep(the prey animals) that have evolved panoramic vision in order to keep a good eye out for predators.

I don't understand what point you're making Agentscott. Can you elaborate please?.

Judging distance is what our eyes do best hence the two eyeballs pointing forwards.
We can trust our eyes very well when it comes to looking at a distant UFO.

Really?. So what you're saying is that our eyes are infallible when it comes to them looking at distant objects and accurately identifying them - is that what you're saying?.

Before you answer - think carefully Wink

yes you are both right on this - our eyes are on the front so we can judge the distance to our prey

as far as we know (maybe aliens Smile ) humans are the greatest known predators, due to our superior intelligence to any other 'known' creature

D B Sweeney, he is saying our eyes are built to judge distance

The Battle of LA is one of the most famous UFO incidents next to the DC flap it has been the best documented incident of the early days of modern ufology. What was it? I think the Battle of LA is a perfect example of how the UFO theory has been used to cover up events that were or are of national security. There may be half truths here, maybe it was an invasion? Maybe it was a balloon but not a weather balloon.

DB have any idea what kind of balloons could be (A) Viewed as a threat against the US at that time? (B) Something that needed to be kept secret from the public. (C) Something that needed to be shot down over a major city?

once you start to look into half truths you are looking into a conspiracy in a conspiracy, you could get lost

Hi mrx, in reply to your points raised:

A) Weather balloons, balloons carrying equipment for spying, weaponised balloons. As I mentioned earlier, this was a time of high paranoia for the USA and the military were on high alert for any kind of potential homeland attack. The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor, and one day after the Bombardment of Ellwood on February 23. When documenting the incident in 1983, the U.S. Office of Air Force History attributed the event to a case of "war nerves" likely triggered by a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining batteries.
Some people would say 'well they would say that in order to cover it up', which is fair comment but looking at the evidence as a whole it's an incorrect assumption IMO.

(B) The few press reports at the time that suggested a cover up were not referring to aliens or UFO's. This was pre-Kenneth Arnold and prior to the 'Flying Saucer' and alien invasion concepts entering popular culture. The cover up put forward at the time referred to secret bases in Mexico or Japanese submarines sitting off the US coast not UFO's. Others speculated that the incident was either staged or exaggerated to give coastal defense industries an excuse to move further inland. The UFO angle was added to this story retrospectively.

C) See reply to point A. This was the USA on a war footing and those guys on the AA batteries were taking no chances. I'm sure there are parallels with the situation in the USA straight after 9/11 and the US being highly suspicious of ANY flights/aircraft that passed over US airspace.
