Good questions Carlos. Also when did you or anyone else use them last and what were they used for, ie what food?. Could someone have used them and damaged them without telling you?. Consider all probabilities.

Carlos,

How old are the spatula's?
I think the oldest one is no more than 3 years old. The one I got last Christmas.

Define melted, a dry puddled mess or are they fused together in certain areas where they over lapped?
Well, they seemed to all be different, the 2 that were stuck together were slightly overlapping. It was like.. the top half of the one was a puddle, when I pulled it out it stretched like it was still molten but it wasn't hot. The one that was overlapping that one was a bit warped but it's a harder plastic I think.

When was the last time you used them? and was it for hot food or cold food?
The one that was affected the worst was one of those straight edge flexy ones used for scraping stuff out of bowls. So that one was used for cold stuff. The other one was a run of the mill frying pan spatula so hot stuff. The one on the other side of the drawer was a smaller version of the first.

What has the weather been like in your area and general temp? Have you had the central heating working over time recently? Any pipes running under neath the units in the kitchen?
It's fall here so it's been a bit chilly but not cold enough to put on the heating yet. The water pipes from the boiler run along the other side of the room though.

How far away is the cutlery draw from the oven? The sink, microwave or even the fridge? My kettle is directly above the draw with my utensils, any chance your kettle has sprung a leak or youve spilt a hot drink? Placed a hot pan on the work top above the drawer recently?
The drawer is kitty corner to the cooker, there are a couple appliances on the counter top directly above the drawer. A toaster, a coffee machine, and a steamer. The kettle is on the other side of the room.

When was the last time you put something back in the draw? anything metal? do you let utensils dry and cool naturally or quick dry and throw them in drawer? Other utensils thrown in while still hot from washing could of helped them to soften.
We're terrible at putting away dishes when they're clean so they've been sitting in the drainer for about 2 days before I even think of putting them away. Lol!

Try and answer these first rather than cracking out a ouiji board or ringing Yvette
I don't own a ouiji board. I'm not convinced this is "paranormal" that's why I posted it in strange rather than any other category, I wanted to see if other people could wrap their heads around it. I've never had this happen before so I thought it was odd. :)

Could it be fair to say that heat from appliances could of caused this?

A toaster, coffee machine and a steamer are above and the toaster and steamer would produce heat. Not to sure on your coffee machine though, is it a grinder to grind beans, or is it the type of machine where it has a hot plate that constantly warms the coffee?

If they have been sat on the drainer for 2 days or so(were exactly the same!), is there a window directly at the kitchen sink? there ususally is, so it could be possible natural sunlight has softened the plastics and while you was making coffee and some toast, you decided to put the washing away.
So natural sunlight has already softened the plastics or warmed any other metal utensils while the draw is warming up with the coffee machine and toaster.

Its a bit far fetched granted, but it could be a probable cause.

Carlos,
It is possible with the appliances. I had a look around after I replied to your message and the steamer has warped the bottom of the cupboards above but I'm not exactly sure how much it heats underneath the actual appliance. I don't lift it or move it while it's doing it's thing, I just take the baskets off the top then let the bottom bit cool till I can drain the water. So that could be the culprit.

The coffee maker is one where you grind the beans and put it into the filter on top, then it runs the water down into the pitcher which is heated by a plate. Not VERY hot mind you. The coffee we get out of it is always barely hot.

I've got fresh batteries in the camera just incase anything odd happens. We've had a weird occurrence with a couple doors I'm trying to figure out.

We have a hard time keeping doors to stay fastened to the wall.

Now it could be the crappy council wood or something but, we don't use the doors, as in we don't close them.
It's the bedroom door and the kitchen door. The bedroom door fell completely off the hinges one day. Now the kitchen door has come away. Woke up one morning and it was like all crooked and hanging on by the bottom hinge.

We use the bathroom door though, it's always opening and shutting and I use the door as a support when I'm getting in and out of the shower cuz the bathtub is quite high up and I feel like I'm gunna do the splits. I'm not exactly tiny either. So if any door should fall off it's hinges you'd think that'd be the one. Especially with the steam and stuff from showering and all that.

The reason again why this seems odd to me is it's never happened to me before. I'm good friends with the neighbor lady across the hall and our flats are identical they're just mirrored. She's never complained of doors falling off the hinges.

DB,

Well, the one plastic scrapey one was used mainly for scraping stuff out of bowls, like cake mixes, getting goopy stuff out of cans, it's got a really thin flexible edge so it gets right into corners and stuff. I made a casserole a couple weeks ago with that one and that was just cold stuff.

The one that was stuck to that one was your run of the mill durable hard spatula I probly used that for stirring something hot recently. I was annoyed cuz that was my favorite one. It wasn't melted into a puddle like the first one but it was a bit warped.

The other one that I had to scrape off the bottom of the drawer was one I rarely used it was a similar scrapey one but it was tiny so I used it to get the stuff out of bottoms of jars and things. Never anything hot I don't think.

As for someone using it and not telling me, I live with my husband Graham and that's it. Not many people visit us, I think the last visitor we had was like.. a month ago. Graham does cook sometimes but it's very very very rare. Even if it's just cheese on toast he makes me do it. But it is possible that he used them and messed them up, then put them away hoping I wouldn't notice. :D

Thanks for the replies MailOrder Smile

I think maybe 'someone' Smile used them but may not have realised how much he may have damaged them and perhaps some warping/melting continued after they had been replaced in the drawer. I'm no expert in the physical properties of plastics but some form of contraction/warping happened as the items cooled?.

No worries DB!

Call me Becca btw. :D I need to get a new screen name that involves my name. :D

I'm gunna test out how hot the drawer gets when I'm using the steamer anyway. Graham keeps fish tanks so I'm sure he'll have a thermometer laying around that I can stick in there while I'm doing Sunday lunch.

Graham said he's innocent. LOL!
