While living in eastern South Dakota as a fifteen year old I loved hunting and fishing and October meant duck hunting so one cold windy morning two old friends Duane Graves and Daryl Boots were with me in my 1951 chevy biscayne. We,d arrived before sunrise to get the best shooting and had struggled to bag a teal duck each and were now headed back for breakfast and school. Despite the fact I had the driver,s side window open the heater was going full blast and I was getting drowsy, but I was,nt too worried as the dirt road would soon give way to black top. It was that final turn just before the county road joins US Highway 281 that there was quite a lot of loose gravel accumulated. As the tyres hit that gravel I woke from my stupor, and seeing the car heading for the narrow shoulder and a steep incline which had a marsh at the bottom of about four or five feet in depth naturally I panicked and made to stomp on the brake. Suddenly beside me was a blonde fellow I hadn,t ever seen before(both my friends were fast asleep in the back) who slid over, blocked my foot from pressing the brake, but instead began to pump the brake as he took the wheel from me and let the car skid naturally, then just before it ran off the road it straightened and then glided to a full stop at the shoulder itself. When I next looked the man had vanished and my friends had awakened wondering what had happened. I tried to explain, but of course they found it hard to believe and to do this day I feel I and my friends were saved by a guardian angel. |
