My researches show that the Lockwoods originated in Yorkshire [North and West Ridings], and Staffordshire [Cheadle and Ellaston]. The 1881 Census (6614 occurences) shows about 55% with that surname lived in the West Riding. There is a place called Lockwood, now in Huddersfield.
In the North Riding it is found in Cleveland. First recorded as Lockwyt in 1273.
It's an Old English/Anglo-Saxon name combining 'loca' and 'wudu' meaning 'enclosed wood'. A Henry de Locwode (knight) is recorded in 1294, in the records of the Staffordshire Courts. Thomas de Loke - Wood is recorded in the 1379 Poll Tax Rolls of Yorkshire. Although in Ellaston Lockwood records go back to 1305.
But the Nottinghamshire Archives also show occurences of the surname in this County. Which is where I live with my boyfriend (it's where he comes from). And I work and do volunteering in Notts.
Yet Lockwoods are also recorded in Scotland, where my grandfather came from (he was a farmer). I am named Alexander after him. The 1891 Census shows the highest concentrations in Renfrewshire and Midlothian. But the surname also appears in Caithness, Lanarkshire, and Selkirkshire.
Regarding America, Lockwoods settled in Salem (Massachusetts), Maryland and Virginia in the early/mid 17th Century
My Nan [Dad's mother] came from the West Country. Her family had the most interesting lineage - English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, French and German. Her family also settled in America in the early/mid 17th Century. Also in Massachusetts and Virginia. Chances are my parents' families knew one another, as communites were very small and close-knit... .
Regarding India, my grandmother (Mum's mother) was born there. As was gran's mother (my great-grandmother). Great-grandma's father (my great-great-grandfather) was born there too. Great-great-grandpa's parents came from Ireland. As did great-grandma's husband. Phew!
My Mum's father's family was Scots-Irish.

My married surname (it's a trade) occurs quite commonly (second only to Smith, apparently!) Although it was adopted from the medieval job description in the 12th century. It is English, though of French origins, and is found in the Somerset Pipe Rolls in 1182.
My maiden name, however, is both Scottish [Dumfriesshire and Fife; an early record is 1204] and English. The latter - Berkshire, Cheshire, Devonshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire. All variously recorded in the Domesday Book [1086]. My particular branch comes from Berkshire, which is where my parents live.
The English version is Anglo-Saxon, and means 'farm or settlement by the moor'.
