About 1985 the American Express Building was having renovations carried out in Haymarket, West London in early autumn and as scaffolding had been erected which would give any energetic intruder easy access American Express had hired my security company to look after the premises while the work was being carried out. In those days before wide use of computers security officers recorded their patrols on patrol clocks and I was required to do regular rounds to ensure all was in order, The patrol was quick-about ten minutes and consisted of two points in the basement to check for flooding, three in the main ground floor trading area, two on the first, second and third floors which were all administration offices, the executive area nd Board Room on the fourth floor and the office storeage area/archives on the fifth and top floor. There was no problem till I reached the top floor and then I had an overwhelming feeling of being short of breath and couldn,t wait to clock the point and return to the staircase where the air was normal again. I did not mention this to the office manager when he took over from me in the mornings, but one evening when I reported for duty at 6;30 pm there were a number of police vehicles parked outside and a police inspector talking to the office manager. Once the police had left I asked what had happened. "Ever so strange!" the manager told me."I,ve had cleaners complain they had trouble breathing and seeing shapes on the top floor, but today when the builders demolished the two hundred year old chimney breast on the left side they found a skeleton bricked up inside and we had to get the police to check it out" They reckon it,s well over a hundred years old!" What,s even more surprising is when I did patrols that night that horrible feeling and breathlessness on the top floor had gone. |

Sounds like the poor soul trying to attract attention. Any other news on who it might have been? |
