My detector of choice in conjunction with a standard EMF meter is a Tri-Field meter. I can quickly switch between fields and determin if the energy detected is either magnetc, electrical, or use the sum of both as a very sensitive mode of operation. You can't just walk around with the Tri-field, it is super sensitive to flux changes and any sudden move will pin the needle. We use it with a slow hand and usually just sit it in a still location and watch it for movement.
We also have experimented with using ion generators to "feed" the entity, however I advice caution with this as it could be a dangerous thing to do using sensitive equipment. Ions and high voltage devices can destroy sensitive equipment and cause false readings. This is still in the experimental phase for us.
Our next important choices are a good digital camera (above 4 megapixels), IR video camera, audio recorders, digital thermometer and last but not least us. Every investigator is a powerful sensitive intrument in his or her own right. Use your senses and you can almost substitute a EMF meter in some cases. Personal experiences can not be ruled out but they can not be recorded usually, use good judgment here.
In one case we were touring a lighthouse and upon entering a particular room which we would later learn was the captains chamber, we both felt an almost electrical sensation. We had nothing but a camerathat day but we recorded no hard evidence with it. We did later learn the Cpt hung himself in the room. Evidence? Maybe but we could not say 100% We did not throw it out but we did not say it was a ghost 100% either. |

Makes one wonder if the energy you felt was residual or an actual manifestation. |

It could have been either or both but it may have been something else all together, thats the probelm I have found with this type of research. Even if we record a positive on the EMF meter that means that the electromagnetic field strength is higher in a given area. In truth we have no clue why it's high, only that it is. |

To your knowledge, have you or anyone you may have heard of used an Electrostatic meter? I understand the magnetic field theory, just wondering if there is any change in static voltage charge + or - when a spirit is felt? |

The tri-field can register static electricity quite well, thats one of the problems with walking around with it. I have never used an electrostatic meter in the field but would imagine that some results, especially if they are ionic could be detected with one. |

I'm going to have to do some more research into the electric/magnatism aspect of ghost hunting. A very interesting scientific study I'm sure. |

Indeed it is. We have theorized using ion generating devices to "help" feed a suposed entity but I think it would cause unreliable test results as well as a posible danger if the aparition were to use the energy to produce psychokenetic manifestations. It would also destroy sensitive equipment nearby so it's not really practicle IMO. |

I suppose we would need scientific evidence as to what type of "electric and/or manetic" principle or particles that a spirit really consists of before one could tell what would "feed it." |

The theory is that "they" can absorb ions or potential energy, that may be why equipment drains and high EMF reading are generated prior to a manifestation either visual or kinetic. |

If this is true, then I have a perfect "lunch special" for them. At my employ we use what is called an "ionized air blower" it uses high voltage to produce ions to eliminate static charges on items.
Its rate of discharge is 0.5 seconds @1 foot, high fan speed (decay 5000v to 500v 20pf plate) up to 10 feet away. High enough of a flow to energize Casper.
Harmless to us but I really wonder what it would do to a spirit wanting to make an appearance. |

Indeed it would be "in theory" :) |

Have to keep this in mind and give it a try if the opportunity presents itself. |
