Digital only high sample rates, many older pre digital EVPs were due to nothing more than motor noises. Digital devices record an absolute, of course there are those who say that the "spirit, etc" use the Hiss from analog tapes to form the EVPs but I think thats reaching a bit. |

My personal preference is for Mini Discs.
If recording digitally, try and ensure that the device records in an uncompressed format - you don't want to be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

We use the Olympus DVR VN-4100PC, just look for high quality sample rates. |

Hi guys,
In the past I was also a fan of the Olympus Digital recorder.
For conducting evp experiments when I was running investigations I always tried to give the following tips:
1. It's worth spending quite a bit of money on the recording device, you don't need to spend as much on the microphone, but if you have a good quality recording device when you come to listening back/enhancing your evps you'll have more success, but you must remember that a good quality recording device will pick up almost everything!
2. A directional microphone will sometimes pick up a noise from an area we physically do not hear with our own ears at the time. We may think it's a noise that wasn't there when in fact it was, and was caused by something explainable.
3. Try not to use the LP setting on your recording device as this will not give you as many sound frequencies and this isn't ideal when listeing back as you'll want to have captured as many as possible.
4. Remember that while sitting in a room for a period of time your ears will adjust to the 'normal' sounds of the room and outside of the room and after a while you will not hear them at all, also, that everyone has a different speed with which they 'stop' hearing natural noise, so what one might hear, another may not.
5. Try not to use any setting on your recording device that sets itself off when sound occurs as you may miss the start of the sound.
6. If conducting evp as part of your vigil it's always a good idea to get everyone to say their name at the begining of the recording so as to eliminate present voice frequencies later on.
7. As well as allowing free use of evp during vigils etc I always liked to have organised evp sessions at the begining of each vigil. This allowed everyone to have a period of absolute quiet when we knew no one was either moving around in the building or talking etc.
8. For those unfamiliar with conducting evp a set of questions can sometimes be helpful, and if you can, try to gear them to the alleged location 'spirits'.
9. When listening back to any evp, if you intend to enhance your recording always remember to keep an original copy seperate to the enhanced versions.
10. Always try to keep in mind when one person hears something on a recording another might hear something different. This is where pareidolia can come into play. It's a good idea, if possible, to send your recording to 20 or so people who weren't present and who have no preconceived ideas about what 'might' be on the recording, to give their opinions on what they hear, if anything.
Apologies if this wasn't the kind of advice this thread was after!
We also tried evp in a sound proof faraday cage, this was quite interesting as we were able to monitor any sounds recorded in one area while the evp experiment was being conducted in another area.
Hope some of this helps anyways,

I use the Zoom H2 ..Its great, high enough quality and can record in almost suround sound. (weird actualy) Then can be normalised if ness. 24wav format and easy as hell to use. Its got 4 mics facing in different directions too.. got some great results with it, If you set it up in conjuction with a compass showing the front of the dictaphone to north. Then applyining it to a map of the venue when listening to it, you can actualy pin point as to where the noise came from!. But I also use 2 Olympus's with pre-amped external mics. I also use a Zoom H1, stereo version of the H2. All good stuff.

Update, I use the RT-EVP almost exclusively now for EVP research.
We also use a ZOOM H2 as one of our investigators is a musician and had one lying around. I like these recorders quite well and use the Olympus as a static recorder now. The H2 is sensitive to movement though, the RT-EVP by DAS was developed for the paranormal investigation field so it has been designed with some nice features as well as not recording a lot of movement when waving it around. |

Hi guys,.
Mic is designed to record to a computer. You can just record the audio on your computer and then sync it up later in your video editing software. |

I have a general question about attempting EVP recording. For example, best location(s) for the attempt? Also, is it a bad idea to try recording in your own home? Forgive me if I sound dumb but is the act of attempting to record EVP in your own home "inviting" something in that wasn't present before? I've heard almost universally negative opinions on use of a Ouija board, for example.
I have (2) Olympus digital voice recorders, models VN240, and VN480PC but have never made a serious effort to record EVP with them. Years ago I accidently recorded a "capture" on an analog cassette recorder, a Panasonic RQ341, not intending to nor even knowing what EVP was back then.
Thank you for any information and advice.

I'm not sure, but I would guess that it doesn't qualify as inviting something in. This was an interesting point to bring up Mike. I too have heard that if you are ever using a ouija board, and the entity asks can it come in, or anything to that effect, it is malevolent and you should stop communicating and put the board away immediately; apparently nothing benevolent will ever ask for any form of permission. I also read that the evil entity can be tricky and put the question in a confusing and deceptive way
Apparently you should also never ask for any particular spirit, and never ask for 'physical proof' as this leaves a doorway open between the spirit and physical world. |
