We use digital, mercury and even max/min thermometers.

My grand father told me that we have to keep any equipment such as iron, stick for dare. If we have something in our hand ghost will not turn to our side. When ghost see any equipment in our hand they will run from there.

That's a new one. Never heard of that before Vincent.

Sounds like superstition to me, either way thermometers are great but if you use a digital (laser spot) IR thermometer try to get one that measures the ambient air temp as well as the spot temp as cold spots usually happen in a, well spot and not on say the wall where the IR beam is focused.

Generally, I find any type of thermometer a waste of time.

If you take the fluid representitive type, the response time is far too long for any type of reading.

The laser type are equally pointless, because the beam will pass through the area to be measured. All you are doing, is measuring the physical object behind.

If you open a freezer door, and pretend that this is your ghost vapourising........a laser thermometer will not read the cold air. Instead it does not see it as solid to take a reading. Perhaps an infra red camera will work better, but they are expensive.

I think about $2000

Incorrect, an IR thermometer with an ambient temp probe measures the temp at both the point of the beam and the tip of the probe and gives a display of both temps. This is the only thermometer which I believe can verify stationary and or moving cold spots in the middle of a room. The nice thing about them is that they can also be used outside.
These are the better ones available.

A lot of these specs. are pretty impressive, but often the reality of a techno fobic ghost hunters paradise, do not mix. What do they mean by ambient....the average ambient or specific?

If I remember from my university days, the ambient meaning room temperature.

It just cannot be done. There has to basically be two extremes.......the actual point the IR hits and the actual pistol grip temperature. Whereby a temperature sensor is on the pistol grip, and the other on the IR spot itself.

The only way it will work, is if the infra red is absorbed by the 'cold spot'.

This is my point, because IR will just pass throught and ignore it.

For example:- If the IR beam is aimed at a hot oven door in a a 21 deg. room, it will give two readings.....

One, being the oven door and the other will be the actual room temperaure itself.

What transducer will give an instant room temperature reading? Unless some sort of thermo receiving diode is used......but how instant do they work?

Perhaps my science is out dated. I would be interested to know, what electronic device can measure air temperature drop in an instance?

Infra red wil just pass through air...whether it be cold or hot, because it's transmissible flow will not imped or accelerate.

To my my understanding, it is the intensity of the IR which raises the voltage to relate to temperature.

In other words, when an object is hot, it will emit IR. So the IR will travel through the cold spot and still be IR,(without dulling) by the time it is received by the gun. Confused

The ambient probe only records at the tip of the device it is attached to. The IR part is the non-contact part. You can also use digital thermometers with data logging ability these are the best by far as the data can be downloaded to the computer for analysis or viewed in real time.

Yes...but do you not agree, that the IR part is just a receiver?

That all it does, is measure the 'redness' of the object emitting the heat? Am I correct in saying that as an object gets hotter, that the colour red will get brighter?

Take low carbon steel for example, I think that brazing temperature is around 3000 deg. C. and it starts to melt at arounf 5000 deg. C. So it's transistion temperature is from a ruby red to a white, which is calibrated in volts by the degree of redness. The redder the steel, the lower the voltage

By setting our calibration from volts to heat, we are able to read the temperature of the steel as it goes from red to white heat.

If what you are sayings, is that the ambient probe is attached to the gun, they are both receivers.

The difference being, is (I think) the ambient receiver will pick up radiation from a wide angle, whilst the IR probe will work by a narrow beam, striking depending on where the gun is pointed. Just like a radar. All the red spot does, is point at the object being measured at a visible wavelength (I think).

I assume you are saying that both probes are contained within the gun?
There are things like thermoristors, but their response time is slow. Other devices like pyrometers, work on high heat levels.

Anyway...just my view.

Oh I agree the IR part is for the most part usless. It can however be used to validate drafts and rule out so called "cold spots"

Well I just ordered a device to end this debate. It takes ambient air temp ever second. Uses a type k probe. I will post a review after Itest it out. Very Happy

worth every penny guys, if you have been waiting to buy a digital EMF meter then wait no more as this thing has both EMF and ambient thermometer built in. If this does not become the standard meter in every serious researchers kit then nothing ever will. Read the full review on my "New Meter" thread. Then go get one and write your reviews. You will love it.
