An investigation is under way into how a blade was mysteriously torn off a wind turbine amid reports of "strange lights" in the sky.
'The Sun' newspaper quoted residents speculating the damage could have been caused by a UFO.

Wind turbine company Ecotricity said it had never seen anything like it before.

A spokeswoman said: "We're conducting a thorough investigation into what happened. This kind of thing has never happened to us before."

The missing blade was found on the ground beneath the turbine, she said, adding that the company could not speculate on the cause of the damage.

Robert Palmer, 66, leader of East Lindsey District Council and member of Lincolnshire County Council, wants both authorities to investigate what happened. A turkey farmer from North Somercotes, he said he saw a bright white light with an orange edge as he drove close to the turbine on Sunday morning.

He said: "I would be very interested to find out what it was. If we are being looked at by other people, by other planets, it would be interesting to find out why they have chosen this part of the country. It's a rich agricultural part of the country and we have got a concentration of turbines here which may have fascinated them. You just don't know, do you?

"I am not counting it out that it was a UFO. There are things out there that you cannot explain. I would have thought that if it was a UFO, it would have been more sophisticated than to drive in to the turbine. It's fascinating."

The Ministry of Defence said it was not looking into the incident.

I am loving the fact that these sightings are becoming more apparent lately, I kow there is that whole theory that Someone sees something so everyone joins in but the fact that there are a lot more actual uk sightings lately is quite exciting.

One thing that does puzzle me, when people spot a UFO, why on earth do they call the police???? lol

Maybe they've been reading the Mail too much, and believe it to be full of illegal aliens?

I'll get my coat!

On a more serious point, it's worth remembering that Lincs has more than its fair share of Military Airfields. Now, I'm not suggesting that an RAF Jet was responsible, as that'd have been noticed, but the army do have radio controlled drones, maybe they were experimenting with a night flying one, and it went a bit wrong?

Wouldn't have thought that was very likely. Although Lincs has large (by our standards) areas of fields, it's nothing like on the scale of the states. I'd be very surprised if there was any firing of rockets within range. Having said that, it's not one to entirely rule out, who knows what the authorities get up to these days

Was the ice caused by aliens from the planet hoth?

To be honest, the sun does love taking one person saying something, and making it "locals discuss possibility" makes for a better headline. Having said that, the broadsheets wouldn't touch a UFO story if a little green man walked up to them, and recounted it himself.

The story has made the online telegraph now, and includes a picture of the damaged blades.

Wow! Localized miniature black hole? That's some serious damage, it would seem something impacted the blade. Reminds me of the old Aroura Texas incident LOL.

Figure that metal was cold, don't know the true temperature but it could be brittle enough to snap off when hit by something, even a large chunk of ice.

Metal fatigue is another possibility mixed with the cold temps could have snapped off like what happens with the wings of planes then the other blade hits that one causing the damage.

ARTICLE FROM TODAYS PAPERS

UFOS have been spotted by HUNDREDS of witnesses close to the wind turbine feared destroyed by an “alien” craft.
The Sun was bombarded with reports of sightings yesterday after we told how one of the 290ft generator’s 65ft blades was ripped off.

Experts have struggled to explain what caused the incident in Conisholme, Lincs, and what was behind the flood of nearby UFO sightings. There have been reports of “flying saucers” for more than six months.

But Ministry of Defence insiders offered an intriguing explanation last night and said the UFOs are a secret unmanned stealth bomber on test flights.

Mystery ... The Sun yesterday

The black delta-wing craft, called Taranis, is about the same size as the Hawk jet trainers used by the Red Arrows at nearby RAF Scampton. The plane is being developed by Bae Systems to deliver bombs in battlefields like Afghanistan.

It is understood to have been making test runs on the coastal bombing ranges at Donna Nook and North Coates . . . right next to the site of the wrecked turbine.

Some witnesses have described seeing a craft dubbed the “Octopus UFO” because strands were dangling from it.

Local John Harrison, 32, said he looked out of his window and saw “a massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground”.

Other respected witnesses, such as local council chairman Robert Palmer and GP Jenny Watson, described seeing “streaking white lights”.

Eric Goring, 61, first noticed eerie goings-on last summer. They have recurred with such frequency Eric began thinking aliens were trying to abduct him.

He said of one close encounter in September: “I saw one come from the fields. I almost walked under it as it was just hovering 200ft above me. I didn’t want to go too near it as I was worried they might beam me up.”

Shaun Hodson, 30, told how he watched an object in the sky on Sunday. The marketing executive said: “I stood and watched it, transfixed. It was like nothing I have seen before.”

Dale Vince, spokesman for Ecotricity, the firm which owns the windfarm, said experts had failed to come up with an explanation for the damage. He said: “We are struggling to find an answer.”

But a Ministry of Defence insider said: “We have to log all reports of UFOs. But in virtually all the cases there is a simple explanation — and test flights are a common one.”

But a theory by Emily Bell, a local blogger for a small newspaper group, that the UFOs were fireworks from her dad’s 80th birthday party were branded ridiculous.
