Hi

I quite commonly get night terrors where i wake up in the night, at the time i am 100% sure i am awake, but then strange things start to happen that scare me so much i cant scream. The first time it happenened, i must have woken up in the early hours of the morning quite firsty. I was positive i was awake, after about 5 minutes i decided to go and get a drink, but as i sat up, somthing pushed me back down against my bed, and it kept continually doing it, i couldnt scream for help because i was so scared. Eventually it stopped and i just laid there untill the morning, drenched in sweat, scared to even move to turn the light on. The next morning, i obviously assumed it was a nightmare. Then it happened again a while later, but slightly different. I woke up in the night, unable to move, (I know all about sleep paralysis however, so this didnt frighten me as such) but then somthing sat on the edge of my bed, and i was unable to turn and see what it was, and it just sat there and looked at me. The time after that, somthing was pulling my duvet off my bed (Althogh im fairly sure this was just a bad dream). Another time this happened (probably my worst experience), i woke up in the night again, absolutely positive i was awake, and somthing again sat on my bed that i couldnt see and grabbed me, again i was too scared to screem. But on this occasion it kept happening throughout the night. I was doing things to try and prove that i was awake, like sitting up and looking out of the window, turning my light on, but it kept happening over and over again, I was DEFINATLY awake. And last night, i woke up at about 6 15, went to get a drink and went back to bed. Literally 10 seconds after i laid down, somthing sat on my bed and grabbed my arm preventing me from turning over. It kept vigorously shaking my arm, i was too scared to scream as always, this time it only lasted a couple of minutes, if that. But its this one that freaked me out the most as it was literally as i was still getting comfortable in bed, there is no way i could have fallen asleep.

The thing that freaks me out most, is that when i have researched things like sleep paralysis, and other people who have had similar experiences, It happens after they have been asleep for a couple of hours. I think some where said that night terrors usually occur after 90 minutes of being asleep, where as mine seem to happen somtimes seconds after i lie down. Also, When people have sleep paralysis, they obviously cant move, some times cant open there eyes. I have no trouble opening my eyes or mouth, i cant move simply because this "thing" is holding me, or pushing me. Another feeling that you are meannt to have with sleep paralysis is that you find it slightly harder to breath, as though something is sitting on your chest. I dont have this feeling either, so i dont see how it could be sleep paralysis what i am experiencing.

Please reply with anything that could possibly explain or help, or hopfully put my mind to rest!

Thanks.

Also the last time it happened. I felt like it was smelling me, or sniffing me. And its occured to me that if it wasnt a dream, and it was somthing paranormal, it might have been my old dog, jed. It was a labrador, that i had know since i was born. It got put down around chistmas when i was really young. That would explain the sniffing. And maybe it was shaking my arm to get my attention or somthing. I dont know, im just guessing.

I got so emotional when i thought of this, almost in tears. Anyone els had somthing like this happened?

Hi 123etc

Hypnagogia and hypnopompia encompass a variety of strange phenomenon - all of which you've described. You may also be lucid dreaming and sleepwalking. You've obviously researched sleep paralysis and this should explain the varied nature of the various sleeping or near sleeping states.

Try getting someone to stay in the room while you're asleep to verify these experiences are happening independently from your own mind - or try setting up a video camera?. If 'something' is sitting on your bed, sitting on you and grabbing you then someone (or the video camera) will see it and confirm your experiences.

IMO you're just having a combination of bad dreams, night terrors and sleep paralysis and there's nothing to be afraid of but fear itself.

PS. The same thing used to happen to me when I was in my teens.

Hi

And yeah, i have been setting up a camera via my webcam for the past couple of nights. Although it crashed on the first night, and im watching the second night through right now.It only happens about once a month though, so its unlikely that im going to catch it on tape. But like you said, if i could verify that its just dreams it would make me feel alot better.

Thanks

Also, how did you manage to stop it from happening? Or did it just stop over time?

I did nothing to make it stop happening it just stopped or should I say that my imaginations and dreams moved on. It did co-incide with the death of my next door neighbour who actually died in the room next door that was next to my bedroom so that would have played a part in firing my subconscious thoughts and dreams.

At the time I made a link between the two and thought the dead lady was haunting me which only made it worse since that was in my thoughts for several weeks - certainly until I gradually ceased to think about it and other teenage distractions elbowed it from my mind.

Keep up with the video, I'm sure it will all pass very soon.
