                                | I read an account years ago, can't remember where, of a boy whose mind was overrun by another personality, seemingly from the past. This person was terrified of the modern world and fled into the attic of the house, refusing to come down for about 10 years. Eventually the boy's original persona returned, but with no memory of the previous decade. Does anyone else remember this? I think Anne Rice used it in one of her books, but I'd heard of it long before that book came out. | |

It's a mental disorder, as Cactus says possibly
 schizophrenia |ˌskitsəˈfrēnēə; -ˈfrenēə|
 noun
a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.
 • (in general use) a mentality or approach characterized by inconsistent or contradictory elements.
