Back in 1972 i hadn,t lived long in england when I landed my first security job in an ancient sweet(candy) factory Barretts of Wood Green at Mayes Road North London-Now Bassetts and the buildings are long gone. I was the security supervisor on the grand wage of 50 pence an hour- a pint of beer then cost 12p. I worked a seventy two hour six day week for £32($48) and not long after the night watchman went on holiday so I had to work a Sunday night in his place. I arrived at 6:30 pm to begin my shift and immediately locked up the offices as all staff were supposedly gone home. I then began my patrol with night watchmans clock-in those days the various points checked and times were all recorded on paper tape to verify that checks were being made. I managed to find my way round most of the large building when I eventually noticed lights on in a particular area and machinery running. A man with a black moustache wearing a tan labratory coat was pouring sugar into a vat of candy so I watched till he was finished. "Oh Hello. You must be the new security supervisor!" he greeted. "Yes-sorry, but I was a bit surprised to find anyone still here as I thought they,d gone home long ago!" "Oh don,t mind me. I,m Frank Martin, foreman of the cloaking department and anyone will tell you I often work late. My wife says I live here and I suppose up to a point I do, but I,ve worked here since I was fifteen and I Love this job." "What,s "cloaking"! then?" I asked. "Oh, this is boiled sweets and the process in coating them in a special recipe which is a bit of a secret, but that,s what we do!" he laughed. "I can hear your american accent very clearly so where are you from?" "Washington State"! I told him. "Well Mr american would you like a very english cup of tea?" "I,m Byron. Byron Thiel and I,d love a cup of tea-one sugar please?" We made small talk as he prepared one cup of tea and then handed it to me. "Aren,t you having one then?" "Sorry no I,ll be off home soon and I,ll have one with my supper!" He then showed me how to operate some of the interesting machinery. "Well I must be going. Don,t worry about letting me out as I have a key for the main gate!" he then went round shutting things off just leaving on the security lights and bid me goodnight. Obviously I had Monday day off so when I returned Tuesday morning the personnel officer asked me how I got on on my night shift. "Very well, thank you and Frank Martin was a great help-he showed me around his cloaking department and some of the machinery. He is a very good person for that!" "Are you sure it was Frank Martin who showed you around?" "Yes-he introduced himself and told me he,s worked here since he was fifteen and that his wife reckons he lives here!" "Just a minute." The personnel officer Mr Puddcombe returned shortly and handed me a photograph that appeared to have been taken some time before with three men in it-the man I,d talked to was on the left smiling at the camera, a younger Mr Puddicombe in the centre and another man on the right I,d not seen before. "Point out Frank Martin to me!" Puddicombe ordered. "The one on the left, but he had a moustache when I met him!" I replied. "Just wanted to make sure". "Frank Martin indeed worked here from the age of fifteen and he Was foreman of the cloaking department. They found him dead of a heart attack in his department ten years ago!"
