Car repair questions.. Help?
I have a 2003 Nissan Altima-2.5 and my car doesn’t want to start. It rotates but it doesn’t start and it also sounds weak. I haven’t had any problems with it whatsoever, ran perfectly well the day before and just today in the morning when I was ready to leave it didn’t want to start. I was able to finally get a hold of a mechanic, he had to pull it over to the shop and told me that based on the noise the car was doing it might be the time chain or a piston. What are the chances of it being one of those options? It really upsets me that just yesterday my car was working fine..I really hope it’s nothing major.

Get a second opinion before you go spending any money.

I've been a mechanic for 8 and a half years and i've never ever diagnosed something from the sound its making. Your mechanic should have taken the cover for the timing chain off to check if it's timed properly, or taken the sparkplugs out and checked the pistons wether its prodding around with a metal rod or using an endoscope. Usually when people say it could be this or that without properly investigating first they are probably trying to squeeze money out of you. |

Guessing that your in the UK, or even in a country with a similar climate(?), And your vehicle is petrol, Its a very common fault for nissans to "flood" with fuel, especially if you have used it for a short journey with out allowing the engine to warm up and the choke to come off.
Every time you turn the ignition to try and start it, it allows more fuel to soak the plugs and so a vicious circle begins to form, As DB suggests, obtain a second opinion, hopefully it will be flooded and removal of the plugs for cleaning should bring your car to perfect working order.
If it is down to flooding, have your mechanic check the cold start valve or the choke control valve(same compnent, different name) as it may be time to replace, once nissans start flooding them selves it usually indicates the valve is faulty.
Also, dont pump the accelerator pedal as this doesnt help either.
Hope you get it sorted. |
